The Careers with an International Angle

Introduction

Nowadays, mass media are the most popular way of communication between people. The media transmit information via film, radio, music, television, press or Internet. It is not a secret that some professions in media are very desirable of many people in the world because working in media can be very interesting and have an international angle but also because of passion and talent or fame and money. There are plenty of jobs in media that have an international angle but the most popular are: acting, singing, politics and journalism.

Acting

Firstly, one of the most popular profession in media is acting. Many people dream to become famous Hollywood actors so the employment in this field is growing really fast. Nevertheless, not all get the chance to become someone popular. This profession is very interesting. Actors mostly perform in television, movies, theaters or commercials. The appearance in a good movie can have an international influence. Most of the very good actors and actress are popular in every country. They have fans all around the world and can affect on many aspects or issues. Besides, working as an actor is not so difficult if somebody is self-confident, has passion to it and the most important talent. However, they do not only occur in television. They may appear on movie premiers in the most popular cities in the world or get a part in a big project. The number of actors in the world is increasing every year. Below I made a pie with statistics of actors employed and working in Los Angeles.(“Actors in L.A.,” n.d.)

On the other hand, being an actor has many dark sides like stress, criticism or lack of privacy. We all know some sad stories about Hollywood actors and how did they end up. However, earnings of actors are very high so it can limit these dark sides of being popular. Even for one appearance on the one scene an actor can earn a lot. Below is the list of four actors and actress earnings from movie roles between June 2013 and June 2014.(“Hollywood salaries,” n.d.)

  • Leonardo DiCaprio- $45M
  • Bradley Cooper- $35M
  • Jennifer Lawrence- $35M
  • Cameron Diaz- $17M

Singing

The second profession with an international angle is singing. We all love music. Everyone likes the different genres of music and have one or more favorite artists/singers. This job is quite interesting and amazing. Singing and making music is a hobby to many people in the world. Moreover, singers have a lot to do. They are writing and recording songs, filming music videos or performing live. Being a singer has a very big influence in the world so it has a huge international angle. Many songs can have a message to the world that can affect on something. Today, almost every famous singer is known in every country. Therefore, they are going on their own concert tours, promoting their albums. Many singers include a lot of countries while they are touring all around the world. Besides, singing is certainly one of the best-paid occupations in the world. The singers earn millions of dollars at album sales and their concert tours. Naturally, not everything belongs to them. They have to pay for the stage, concert halls, dancers, crew and many more stuff that without them, the tour would not be able to held. The popularity of music in our lives we can also see on the statistics based on videos watched on YouTube in five continents.(“YouTube Statistics,” n.d.)

The statistics show that music videos are one of the most popular category of media to watch on YouTube on every continent (Africa was not included).

 Politics

The third profession that has an international angle and that some people do like it and do not is politics. Politicians are elected by the public or various leadership positions. The whole country or many nations (people who decided to vote), make an affect to who is going to take the responsibility of their country, of their problems and requirements. Politics is very important thing for every country. Politicians have to struggle with their own vanity, understanding diverse personal and political challenges and opportunities in our fast-changing world. Being a politician has many different challenges such as steering of the land or many world issues. It depends a lot by them how the country is growing up. Foreign policy also plays a big role. “It is plan of action adopted by one nation in regard to its diplomatic dealing with other countries”. (“Foreign policy,” n.d.) Each country on the international area realizes their own aims and interests through cooperation with other countries. Moreover, foreign policies protect the national interests, safety and economy of the countries. In addition, international relations are very important too in the foreign policies. International relations are obviously relations and affairs between countries but they are also organizations and institutions from many countries. Examples of them are: Amnesty International, Canadian International Council, Norwegian council for Africa, United States Institute of Peace or World Economic Forum. (“International Organizations,” n.d.) Altogether, politicians always take part in the developments on the international area. There a many known politicians in the world but the most popular are:
• Vladimir Putin (President of Russia)
• Angela Merkel (Chancellor of Germany)
• Barack Obama (President of the United States)
• David Cameron (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom)
• Tony Abbott (Prime Minister of Australia)
• Francois Hollande (President of France)
(“Politicians,” n.d.)

 Journalism

The last popular profession in media is journalism. Journalism is the activity of collecting, writing and publishing information and news stories in the television, radio, Internet or newspapers. Journalism is also a part of three previous professions. In acting, singing and politics we have, for example, interviewers, reporters or paparazzi. The most general form of journalism is broadcast journalism. We have many branches of journalism now, for instance, in the television or press we can see reports, relations, interviews, news or statements. In modern times blogging has become the most common branch of journalism. All of these things get to every person on earth. Nevertheless, blogging is both a hobby or job for teenagers and adults. Some years ago blogs were more private but now the thematic scope of blogs is huge. The majority of blogs are considered as journalistic. A lot of bloggers are writing and publishing posts about their experiences from the journeys, events (concerts, exhibitions, interviews or celebrations). Journalists are traveling all around the world to do their job. They are visiting many places to convey something to they others. By journalism we can spread everything globally. Notwithstanding, job as a journalist can have also some disadvantages, such as, stress, many hours of working and danger. Sometimes it can be really dangerous if they will travel to the place where the war occurs or the situation is unstable. Journalists are in this case at a big risk. In 2007, totally 86 journalists were killed, 67 were kidnapped, 1511 were physically attacked and 887 were arrested. (“Journalists Statistics,” n.d., col. 6)

Synopsis

Working in media can be very interesting and have an international angle. Occupations like acting, singing, politics and journalism are the most desirable in media because of many reasons. However, it is not always a fabulous and wonderful life with luck. People working in this area also struggle with many problems as normal people.

Summary of what I have learnt in chapter 3

In this chapter I have learnt things like diffuculties in communication, "Multiculturalism in the Anglo-American World"

I have also learnt a lot about the migration this times. About the migration to the UK and Australia and about their point of views to the refugees. I have worked in group on Australians point of view. We have watched a very good series about six Australians who have different views about Australian’s asylum seekers debate so they are being taken on a journey in reverse to that which refugees have taken to reach Australia. You can watch it here

Morevover, I have watched and found some videos of funny communication situations:

This whole video is funny but the parts with the communication problems are at 1:50, 3:37, 5:17.

I have also learnt the meanings of these two concepts:

  • People traffickers are people who are trading other people, most commonly, for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker. Nevertheless, it is a human trading and big problem of the world.

  • Frontex is s an agency of the European Union established in 2004 to manage the cooperation between national border guards securing its external borders. Frontex operations aim to detect and stop illegal immigration, human trafficking and terrorist infiltration. The agency has its seat in Warsaw, Poland. Frontex helps the countries of Europe manage their borders and keep up with changing trends in border control.

Also, the differences between economic migrants and refugees.

Refugees are people who are escaping their motherland because of war or threat of life, health or freedom but economic migrants are people who leave their country to seek better living standards.

Spot check pages 102&112&115

a) Why culture is important for communication?

In communication that what we are saying is a web of assumptions, values, expectations, feelings, ideas and common experiences that we
share. They all taken together can be our culture.

b) Why is command of English in itself no longer enough for accurate communication?

Since English is increasingly used in intercultural communication, it has become important for English speakers to train themselves to be aware both of their own culture and of the culture of the people they speak with.

c) Into what three parts can communication be divided?

- a sender
- a message
- a receiver

d) What is cultural relativism?

Cultural relativism is the opposite of ethnocentrism. It means that one does not dismiss or condemn other cultures simply because they are different from one’s own.

p. 112

a) What percentage of the UK population is of New Commonwealth heritage?

The 10% of the UK population is of New Commonwealth heritage.

b) Why is the US referred to as a “Nation of Nations”?

Because the massive immigration has created a patchwork quilt of nationalities spread across the continent.

c) What is the difference between a community and an association?

A community is held together by blood, language, territory, history and common values while association is something consciously created by a common set of rules and laws.

d) Why do some believe that multiculturalism has gone too far?

They say that it threatens central values and characteristics of the nations.

e) Why do some believe that multiculturalism hasn’t gone far enough?

They say that minority cultures are under pressure to conform from an established majority, which does not recognize them as equals. In their view, it is not necessary for ethnic minorities to give up their cultural identity in order to belong to the nation.

p. 115

a) What kind of jobs did many New Commonwealth immigrants to the UK get?

New Commonwealth immigrants often got unskilled, poorly paid jobs.

They have contributed to British society by bringing new food and traditions. Also by contributing to the national economy by working.

d) Why do some Britons wish to end “state multiculturalism”?

They want to end it because they think that it has come too far.

e) What is meant by the term “beyond multiculturalism”?

It means to create society that gives respect for minority cultures, as well as ensuring their integration into the nation.

The Refugees and the European Borders

After that, the border between Serbia and Hungary have been closed last Monday, the refugees find out the other route to get to the UE countries and they started to cross through the Croatian border. However, hundreds of refuges are still waiting near the Serbian border with Hungary. The Croatian Prime Minister said that they are ready to receive and help them or direct those people where they want to go. Moreover, many of the UE countries such as Austria and Slovakia with Hungary or Germany with Austria have restored the border controls.

The news channels to compare where I found the information about this issue are:

Information about these channels:

- Al Jazeera (Arabic television channel based in Qatar with the worldwide broadcast. Since 2006, Al Jazeera broadcasts in English).

- BBC News (the public-service broadcaster of the United Kingdom, headquartered at Broadcasting House in London. It is the biggest and the oldest national broadcasting organization).

By the questions on the page about bias media, I will compare this news.

Is there a lack of diversity?

The BBC has over 200 correspondents based both in the United Kingdom and abroad. However, there is a lack of diversity. The BBC News presenters and correspondents are mostly British and white. That may have an impact on the bias. The Al Jazeera Media Network has more than 4,000 highly experienced staff from over 70 nationalities, making their newsrooms the most diverse in the world.

From whose point of view is the news reported?

In the both channels, the point of view is the same. Both channels have sent theirs correspondents to the place where it happens and made accurate reportage. However, Al Jazeera has only made a reportage while BBC has made reportage and took some pictures of the situation. Both channels have also collected a lot of information and have quoted some things.

Are there double standards?

No, I have not found any double standards.

Do stereotypes skew coverage?

At both news channels there are no any stereotypes. The all information is based on the real stories and experiences. However, at the BBC New there may have some of the stereotypes in the relation to the countries, which have to struggle with the refugees. Therefore, they can try to portray these countries in a bad light.

What are the unchallenged assumptions?

The stories based on facts on both news so there is no unchallenged assumptions.

Is the language loaded?

They language can be loaded by showing cruel pictures or videos in these news and by writing horrible information about it and using stereotypes , which can cause the various feeling about story.

Is there a lack of context?

No, there is no lack of context.

Do the headlines and stories match?

No. Both channels have used a lot of information. The headlines in both news match the story.

Are stories on important issues featured prominently?

Yes. The stories are on the front pages and on the editorial pages all the time.

In the quick summary it is a big problem of Europe. Many people are distrusful of decisions of the European politicians. Also, many times in the television I have heard that among the refugees may be terrorists and immigrants from Africa that are not escaping the war. The one visible thing between these two channels that I figured out is that BBC News called them as "migrants" but Al Jazeera called them as "refugees". Correctly, Al Jazeera called them in good way because migrants are people which want to change their living location while refugees are people which have to leave the area where they lived because of the threat to life, health, or freedom.

Report about journalism

Date: September 11, 2015
To: Students
From: Jakub Lazarowicz
Subject: Journalism- how the journalists work

Bias Media
Nowadays, media over-raly on “official” sources. The media bias is a systematic favoring of mass media on the one point where these activities are media corporations, governments or political parties, thus they are reinforcing a system of interests and weakening the alternative arrangement. Bias is important in so far as influences the attitudes and behavior of people. The most common forms of bias used to include media manipulation are, for example: election adverting, corporatism, mainstream, media sensations and censorship. Moreover, usually headlines are not written by reporters, since many people just skim headlines, misleading headlines have a significant impact. Here you will find ho to detect bias in news media.

Today’s journalism- the fact and fiction
Today, the journalists are reacting to news from the audience and by this, they are actually relying on people in the streets and monitoring what they are talking about and experiencing. Now, people are helping the journalists figure out what is the angle today. One of the most important source of their work are social medias, such as YouTube, Snapchat, Spokeo, Instagram and the most popular Twitter. However, journalists, not always write the truth about something. Even, if the information is based on the truth from the people, they will change it to be more interesting to the readers or they will include less information if the situation should not be spread into the world at all or if they do not want people to know the whole truth. The journalists also have to struggle with the fiction such as fake and old photos and videos posted by people so they have to find out what is the fact and what is not. Here you can watch a video about "what do journalists do when they find news online?".
